A firewall can be a single, simple device, or a complex set of servers.
The main goal of a firewall is to limit access to certain packets of information.
Most firewalls today employ "stateful inspection" which means they are analyzing
each packet in real time as it passes through the interface.
This was once only available to higher-end firewalls. Today,
most firewalls are differentiated by the sheer amount of packets that can
flow through its interfaces per second. This is also called the firewalls
"throughput".
There are many brands of firewalls on the market today. Some just stick to inspecting packets
of data and allowing or disallowing based on a number of user defined rules.
Others have added services such as web filtering, VPN, and failover.
We have worked with many types of firewalls - from the single disk Gnatbox to an enterprise
Cisco PIX firewall. We have also deployed Checkpoint, Sonicwall, and Linksys.
Please check our Case Studies for further information on our successful firewall deployments.
