A "network" in the computer world is a place with many devices.
There are so many different devices, that a model has been developed
to describe the logical breakdown of each one.
This is called the OSI Reference model and is basically the idea of
one "layer" building upon the previous "layer".
So, for instance, the first layer is called the physical layer and in this layer you would have
a physical connection from your hub to your Ethernet card in your machine. If the cable becomes
unplugged, you could say that this is a layer one problem.
The layers go all the way up to layer seven.
A network is typically divided into a LAN (Local Area Network) and a WAN (Wide Area Network).
A LAN, like the name implies is a network that is local - it does not leave the office or
building that it is based in. A WAN goes outside the building and typically is connected
by a series of leased lines or more commonly - a VPN.
